Christchurch International Airport Ltd is planning to worsen our climate emergency by building an international airport in Tarras (Central Otago). Christchurch International Airport is 75% owned by the Christchurch City Council (CCC), through Christchurch City Holdings Limited and 25% owned by the Government. So it is 100% publicly owned with a controlling interest from CCC. This airport proposal is a glaring contradiction to the CCC’s Climate and Ecological Emergency declaration on 23rd May 2019. Clause 3 of the declaration states: ‘Climate change leadership and safe and sustainable water should be the overarching objectives of our key Strategic documents. On Thursday 3rd December at the CCC’s Finance Meeting, councillors will vote to approve a "Letter of Expectation" to Christchurch City Holdings Limited. Extinction Rebellion Ōtautahi and other gruops will give presentations in the allotted public presentation half hour at start of the CCC meeting. Our presentation will address acting on the climate and eco emergency and the incompatibility of the new Tarras airport to the climate emergency. We will perform a die-in either inside or outside the CCC building. This is an easy, non-arrestable action that requires as many people as possible. Invite friends and family, this will be a great way for people to start getting involved. Meet 9am at the north (Worcester Boulevard) entrance to the council building. Wear black if possible for the die-in.
