Life on Earth is in crisis: scientists agree we have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown, and we are in the midst of a mass extinction of our own making. Member of Extinction Rebellion Peterborough & Stamford are inviting people to join with them and gather in Cathedral Square for a lantern vigil on Election night. The evening will bring singing and sharing of food and stories, giving those present an opportunity to reflect together on the crisis we face. Bring your candles and lanterns & food to share (preferably vegan). The theme is ‘Sleep walking into Extinction’ and people are invited to attend in their night wear, although this is not compulsory! The group are protesting Government inaction on the climate & ecological crisis and the need for more urgent action as part of the '12 days of Crisis Election Rebellion’. Current Targets for Zero Carbon: - The Greens have a target of 2030 - Labour have a target of Net Zero by the 2030's - Lib Dems 2045 - Conservatives 2050 Extinction Rebellion’s three demands are: 1. Tell the truth: Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change. 2. Act Now: Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025. 3. Beyond Politics. Citizens Assemblies: Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
