Join us in a peaceful rally to support Sioned Jones on her day in Court. We aim to raise awareness of Coillte's mis-management of sitka spruce plantations and will hold a theatrical action to highlight this issue outside of the courthouse. The action is non-arrestable and family friendly. Please come dressed in GREEN. We encourage people to use public transport or carpool if travelling long distances. Please use this platform to ask for and offer lifts. ############################################# In County Cork, Leitrim, and all over Ireland a vast green plague of non-native sitka spruce plantations is spreading over the landscape. These densely planted monocultures allow no understory to grow and so are devoid of animal life. The clearfell method of harvesting leaves an apocalyptic-like scene in its wake, and any life that manages to grow subsequently is soon contaminated by the herbicides and pesticides used to establish new plantations, and meanwhile the acidic pine needles affect the pH of the soil and waterways. Of the 20% forestry managed for biodiversity, many trees are planted in thin rows along the edge of the quick and tall growing spruce trees, so that they grow thin and spindly and are unable to fend for themselves when their spruce shelter is removed. In West Cork one woman has been working quietly away on her own rewilding project, creating a vastly improved landscape of native woodland. Sioned Jones, a biochemist and lone activist has been removing the pest sitka spruce trees from a patch of land above her home and replacing them with native woodland trees over a period of 14 years. Her re-wilding project is now a young established woodland, teeming with biodiversity and life. Sioned is being charged with Criminal damage, a charge which she denies on the basis that she committed that crime to prevent a more serious crime of ecocide taking place. Extinction Rebellion West Cork stand in solidarity with Sioned and ask that you join us on a day to bring attention to her cause. this woman is a environmental hero. We call on all other environmentalists and citizens concerned by the Coillte mismanagement to stand up and fight for nature. Sioned's trial will take place on February 27th. @[2493429500670215:274:Extinction Rebellion West Cork] calls for a peaceful gathering outside the Anglesea Street courthouse in Cork city at 9.30am on February 27th.
